WATSU
AQUATIC BODYWORK IS A HEALING JOURNEY FOR BODY AND being
Held in warm water, the body is invited into a different way of being. The pull of gravity eases. Effort fades.
Floating, gentle movement, stretching, compression, and stillness unfold in quiet conversation with the water and the practitioner’s hands. As muscles soften and joints decompress, the nervous system settles and the mind loosens its grip.
In this weightless environment, the body’s innate intelligence leads — inviting rest, integration, and a deep sense of connection that extends beyond the edges of the self.
Watsu originated at Harbin Hot Springs in the early 1980s with Harold Dull, drawing from Zen Shiatsu and adapted for body-temperature water. Today it is practiced worldwide as a one-to-one, passive aquatic bodywork modality with broad therapeutic and rehabilitative applications.
Studies have shown many benefits of Aquatic Bodywork, including:
RELIEVES MUSCLE TENSION, BACK PAIN & JOINT STIFFNESS
INCREASES FLEXIBILITY & MOBILITY
DOWN-REGULATES THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
PROMOTES DEEP RELAXATION, CALM, & BALANCE
DECREASES ANXIETY & EFFECTS OF STRESS
REDUCES ADHD & ADD SYMPTOMS
IMPROVES BREATH & SLEEP PATTERNS
IMPROVES DIGESTION & IMMUNE RESPONSE
ENHANCES MIND/BODY CONNECTION
I USED TO BE A DOLPHIN…
LONG BEFORE WATSU OR FILMMAKING OR MEDITATION, I reckon I LIVED BENEATH THE WAVES
As a documentary filmmaker, I’ve always been drawn to stories that inspire us to recognize the humanity in others and feel our own humanity more deeply, and to life experiences that do the same.
As time passed, I began to embrace more and more my role as human being over human doing. With this came more and more meditation and time in nature. And the subsequent rediscovery of ancient and timeless memories of when we all were one, and the growing sense that we all still are.
Which brings me to this current time. To these offerings in water, designed to support healing and restore our natural connection to self, to others and to nature.
I am a WABA (Worldwide Aquatic Bodywork Association) certified Watsu® practitioner. I trained with Cameron West and Mary Seamster, two OG Watsu powerhouses, and am expanding my training in Aquatic Integration® with Cameron West. My meditation certification draws on many traditions, as taught to me by my amazing mentor, Sarah McLean, at MMI in Santa Barbara, CA. My (land) bodywork instruction, including Cranio Sacral, Shiatsu, and Swedish massage came from the many talented teachers at McKinnon Massage Institute in Oakland, CA.
In addition to my private Watsu practice in various Bay Area pools, I volunteer with adults and seniors with a wide array of developmental disabilities at the Janet Pomeroy Center pool in San Francisco.
I truly believe in the transformative power of all of these modalities. I’d love to share them with you and be your partner in re-awakening and supporting your body’s own innate ability to heal.
It feels good to feel good.
